File extension ODT is used by Open Document Text files that are created by the OpenOffice software suite. These files contain word processing documents. Open Document Format is XML based and therefore easily portable. ODT files can be opened by several programs other than Open Office. These include: NeoOffice, Corel WordPerfect, Lotus Symphony, Google Docs online service.

Please note that Open Document Format used by file extension ODT is different from "Office Open XML" which is used by Microsoft Office (.File extension docx) and "Open Document Architecture" (.File extension rdo)

File Microsoft Office doesn't provide native support for ODT files there exists an "ODF add-in for Word". This project was originally started as Open XML translator and is currently maintained by several Microsoft partners on SourceForge.net
